Rose Simon & the Rose Order

The Rose Temple is a mausoleum now. Black riders came in the night and slaughtered the knights. They are piled in the temple center with rose petals strewn on their fallen bodies, burning flesh and sweet smells rising to the gods to please and disgust. The rose fields are trampled by hooves; and Rose Simon keeps the fire going until the bones and plate are all that remains.

Rose Simon takes the incense lamp and the sacred sandals, and reconsecrates the fields. Sweet smells waft in the air as he walks among the trampled petals, and incense-ash falls to the ground. The fields are crushed and color-strewn. He does not take off his Rose armor, save the rose-tint bronze helmet with its petalled crests, which he lays on the altar-benches in the circular temple proper with its rounded-star roof. The smoke burns and he prays, inured to the smell of his burning brethren. He prays as nights pass, and the fuel begins to run out, and the gods watch in mourning.

Rain falls, and prayer fails. Rose Simon smells of smoke and dead men. He weeps over the dimming fire, and his tears fizzle. The distant trees rustle, and the petals smoke as a woman in gossamer robes walks up the path. Her dress is rose-red, her eyes flame-orange, her feet bare, and on her head is a wreath of roses and thorns. She enters the temple and the flames spark in shock at the transgression. She takes the hands of Rose Simon and stares into his weeping, furious eyes; and an orange flame sparks in them.

The Rose Temple is in ruins now, its fields blossoming with Roses of all colors; and Rose Simon is alone among the ruins, meditating beside the open fire, holding a spear with a petalled point and a lamp full of incense. It is unclear what he protects now, or when his duty will end.

Rose Simon

HD 7

Defense: as Chain

Attacks: 3, d8

Movement: 50ft, mostly-horizontal leaps

Int as human

Usually accompanied by 2d4 Rose Nymphs.

Standard

Incense Lamp: When Rose Simon moves, he leaves a trail of incense smoke in his wake. Enemies who walk in it must save Con or spend the rest of their movement moving in a random direction (or choose not to move at all).

Rose Spirit: While Simon is not bloodied, the Rose spirit plays defense for him. Characters with high insight/charisma can see her; others can’t. Enemies who attack and miss must roll Strength or have their weapon seized by invisible hands and thrown in a random direction. Projectiles which deal zero damage due to Simon’s armor are caught mid-air by the spirit, and may be thrown as one of his attacks next turn.

Windup Attacks

Petal Spear: Simon may forgo all of his attacks to launch the Petal Spear. This attack deals 2d12 damage if it hits, and if it reduces the target to zero HP, it goes straight through him, hitting targets on the other side.

Lamp Billow: Simon opens the shutters of his lamp and lets tons of incense billow out. This round, enemies within 5 feet must save versus his Incense Lamp effect. Next round, enemies within 30ft must save instead.

When Bloodied:

Awakened Rose Spirit: the Rose spirit emerges from Simon and begins acting on her own. Her priorities are first to protect Simon, and second to hurt anyone who hurt Simon.

Brazier Boiling: The flames of the brazier grow huge and angry. Screams of long-dead knights fill the air, a cacophony of anguish and hurt. The entire temple center is filled with flames.

Rose Knives: Simon will throw a knife before making an attack. These are Piercing.

  • Windup Attack: Skewer Combo

If Simon hits an enemy, he may make a combat maneuver check to skewer them. If he skewers them, then he will, on his next turn, leap towards the nearest wall and pin the spear to the wall, leaving them stuck there and dealing d4 damage for every 10 feet travelled. After this he makes knife attacks instead of spear attacks unless the spear comes free and he retrieves it.

Rose Spirit

HD 5

Defense: as Leather

Attacks: n/a

Whirl: Immediately after Simon takes damage, the Rose Spirit may manifest herself in his location. He is moved 5 feet away from the opponent and the Rose spirit is interposed between them.

Choir Wind: The Rose spirit summons a wind that blows in a certain direction. PC’s trying to move into the wind must spend 10ft of movement not to be pushed back. +5ft for every nymph present-- they join the song. The song ends if a nymph dies or the Rose Spirit loses concentration. This also blows Simon’s Incense Lamp effect in the direction of the wind, and limits the range of ranged weapons by twice the amount it limits movement.

Shield: The Rose spirit can increase her armor, or Simon’s armor, to Plate, immediately before an attack hits. If she increases Simon’s armor value, she teleports directly behind him, or to an open adjacent square.

Windup Attacks

Petal Storm: the grounds of the temple are filled with petals. She may teleport anywhere within the petal storm after summoning it. This area is heavily obscured, except to Simon, the Rose Spirit, and any nymphs.
